Build a strong framework
Start with the route through the garden and a useful place to sit. Paths should be comfortable underfoot and wide enough for how the space is used. A bench, small table, or low wall can provide a destination without filling the entire courtyard with furniture.
Plant for more than one moment
Mix evergreen structure with plants that change through the year. Leaf shape, seed heads, and bark can offer interest even when flowers are absent. Choose species for the actual sun, soil, and water conditions of the site rather than a reference photograph.
Make care realistic
Allow access for pruning and cleaning, and give containers enough volume to hold moisture. Consider drainage before adding hardscape or raised beds. A garden that is easy to maintain will look considered for more of the year.
